Boehringer Ingelheim
Headline intensities
Carbon per million dollars of revenue. The legacy industry-standard reference (CDP, MSCI). Useful for cross-sector context, but distorted by margin — high-margin firms appear artificially efficient. Read alongside the operational and asset intensities for the full picture.
OpEx (operating expenditure) is the running cost of the business — staff, services, energy, materials. This shows how carbon-intensive operations are per million dollars of spend. Removes the margin distortion that revenue-based ratios introduce.
EVIC (Enterprise Value Including Cash) is the firm's total capital footprint — equity + debt + cash + minority interest. The EU's standard intensity measure (SFDR PAI 3) — answers: how much carbon does each million of capital deployed in this business produce?
PP&E (Property, Plant & Equipment) plus leased real-estate assets is the firm's physical infrastructure on the balance sheet. This shows the carbon intensity of that physical footprint — uses Scope 1+2+3 for consistency with the other headline intensities. Surfaces stranded-asset risk for asset-heavy firms.

Strategy & approach
How the firm describes its decarbonisation approach in its own words — alongside the headline numbers above. Self-reported, page-cited.
By 2023, over 70% of worldwide electricity was renewable, achieved through transitions at various sites and the launch of a 1.2 MW solar plant at corporate headquarters in Ingelheim. A new biomass power plant is set to begin operations at headquarters in 2024. On-site renewable generation is being expanded, e.g. solar panels at the Shanghai production site.
Since 2019, Boehringer has increased climate contributions beyond its value chain to 15 carbon reduction projects in 11 countries worldwide, in partnership with ClimateSeed — more than 230,000 tCO2e captured or avoided. Projects cover reforestation, biodiversity and clean energy and add social value in communities in Canada, China, Malawi and Peru. The firm does not separate durable removals from avoidance credits.
- Zero Waste to Landfill across production sites
Waste to landfill reduced 62% in absolute terms since 2010 baseline. Shanghai (2021), Sant Cugat (2023) and Dortmund (2023) achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification. 2023 waste split: 59% recycled/reused, 23% waste-to-energy, 6% landfill, 10% incineration without heat recovery.
- On-site renewable generation at production sites
Decarbonisation of operations through on-site solar (1.2 MW at Ingelheim HQ, additional panels at Shanghai) and a new biomass power plant at Ingelheim starting operations in 2024. Eight sites are now carbon-neutral certified.
- Water stewardship at water-scarce sites
Implementation of Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) certification at all sites affected by water scarcity, with Fremont (USA) and Promeco (Mexico) certified. Water consumption held flat (6.2 million m³ in 2023 vs 6.3 in 2019) despite increasing production. 'Clean Water Initiative' keeps pharmaceutical traces in production wastewater below effect level.
- Internal carbon price of EUR 100/tCO2 to steer CapEx
An internal carbon price of EUR 100 per ton CO2 is applied to investment decisions to foster low-carbon technologies and solutions. This is reinforced by the MORE GREEN Fund (EUR 130 million) which has supported over 65 CapEx projects since 2020, focused on decarbonization, circular economy, water management and biodiversity.
- Green chemistry and eco-design mandatory for new products
Boehringer has made it mandatory to apply green chemistry and eco-design principles to all new products, addressing emissions and environmental impact embedded in product design and the upstream value chain.
