Updated GHG calculation methodology with third-party expert

Omnicom built an environmental data platform integrated with a third-party carbon calculator to measure emissions more accurately. Methodology continues to follow GHG Protocol and aligns with CDP and SBTi frameworks.

SBTi-validated 46.2% reduction target by 2030 vs 2019 baseline

Omnicom set a new near-term target to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions 46.2% by 2030 against a 2019 baseline, aligned with Paris Agreement and 1.5°C trajectory. Validated by SBTi in early 2023.

Restated Scope 1 & 2 emissions for 2019-2021

Omnicom restated Scope 1 and 2 emissions data from 2019-2021 due to use of a more updated and comprehensive calculation methodology. As a result, Scope 1 and 2 emissions are higher compared to previously reported levels, except for Scope 1 in 2019 which is lower.

Founding member of Global Ad Net Zero

Omnicom continued role as founding member of Global Ad Net Zero, supporting industry rollout beyond the UK launch.

Added five new Scope 3 categories

Scope 3 reporting expanded from only Cat 3 (partial) and Cat 6 to now include Categories 1 (Purchased Goods & Services), 2 (Capital Goods), 3 (Fuel & Energy), 5 (Waste), 6 (Business Travel), 7 (Employee Commuting), and 8 (Upstream Leased Assets). Scope 3 emissions increased significantly as a result.

Added SASB disclosures specific to industry

In 2021, Omnicom eliminated 435,000 square feet of space from its real estate footprint, transitioning to agile/flexible work arrangements with unassigned desks and shared spaces, contributing to energy savings.

COVID-19 reduced building usage and energy footprint

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically reduced building usage in 2020 and 2021. Travel and commuting still fell well short of pre-COVID levels in 2021, contributing to reductions in measured energy and emissions. Energy use shifted to homes/remote work locations that Omnicom cannot accurately measure beyond owned/leased facilities, complicating year-over-year comparisons.

Committed to Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

In 2021, Omnicom committed to joining the Science Based Targets initiative and began work with an environmental management consultancy to set a baseline with a full global carbon footprint, finalize an Environmental Strategy including future emissions reduction goals and formally submit to SBTi.

Commitment to join Science Based Targets initiative

Omnicom announced it will soon be joining the Science Based Targets Initiative, which audits participating companies on their emissions goals and evaluates whether they are in-line with the global mandate to keep warming below 1.5 degrees. New goals to reduce carbon emissions and source electricity from renewables are under development.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most buildings were sparsely used in 2020, and travel/commuting were reduced dramatically, accelerating apparent progress toward energy and emissions goals. Some energy use shifted to home offices and is unmeasured. GHG emissions fell 63% YoY.
